History of my railways
My portable railway hobby began in 1979 and has grown from a small 5" gauge loco called “Simplicity”, driver’s truck and box van. All these are still used to day. The term “railways” is used, as there is a variety of rolling stock and track sizes of 5" and 7¼" gauges.
The railway has conducted a Risk Assessment of its operations. Rules have been formed and both may be seen by those interested to learn about Risk Assessments. With the design of my vehicles and working to rules I feel that we are very safe and know that operators must not be distracted from the job they have to do. At times it can be busy and demanding.
For years the railways branch line mini trains have run for passengers at many places . Some have been attended every year for almost the age of the 30 years old railway. I try hard not to let anyone down but sometimes personal commitments get in the way and at other times as many as four can clash on the same date.
Because portable tracks cannot be very long the usual fare can only be a few pence the income will always be modest. But interesting to see and an experience to travel on the train. All voluntary.
The mini railway has been privileged to have a historical past in this part of North Yorkshire. Twice to have run on an extended line on Saltburn Pier. Once being the “first train” to return to Hawes Station since closure. To have been a founder railway to the Teesside Small Gauge Railway at Preston Park near Stockton-on-Tees. To have “saved the day” when the Saltburn Miniature Railway could not run their first operating day since closure. To have run trains down Stokesley High St. To have been photographed and videoed many many times. There have been many demands and excitements over the 30yrs. Passengers being very young and to the elderly. It has carried Mayors and TV personalities.
The most touching experience was when invited to Buckingham Palace Garden Party 2004 because of the railways activities. It was truly a wonderful day.
